S.C. Smith is a generative dramaturg and creative strategy consultant.

What is a generative dramaturg?  An experiment in progress…

To start, he has an MFA in Dramaturgy from Columbia University.  This means he is trained to be the dedicated person on the creative team whose primary task is to support the project’s development by asking key questions, starting conversations, and challenging assumptions.  Classical dramaturgy involves deconstructing and recontextualizing Shakespeare and Chekhov.

As an alumnus of the Digital Storytelling Lab, S.C. now practices “generative dramaturgy”.  Subverting classical dramaturgy, he radicalizes dramatic theory and composition to generate emergent, experimental moments of life x art.

His work has been programmed at the New York Film Festival, The New Ohio Theater, The Park Avenue Armory, HERE Arts Center, and featured in The New Yorker, Vulture Magazine, Broadway World, and Hollywood Soapbox.

As a creative strategy consultant, he works with brands to tell innovative, often experiential stories. A selection of his client list includes Blockchain Creative Labs (Fox Entertainment) @ SXSW, ConsenSys, and Coinbase.
